Hi All!
I scored a nice project engine today. A 4hp Myrick Machine Company, Olean, NY "Eclipse" gas engine. It was originally part of a model "1916" direct gear driven pumping power. AND..it came factory equipped with a Wico PR magneto. That's the unusual part that made me just have to have it! I need a mag and a intake valve/mixer to complete it plus some sheet metal work. But that stuff will come in due time. The engine was loose but starting to stiffen up. Another year and it most likely would have been a different story. I started disassembling it this morning (work is slow right now) Everything is coming apart easily and in good shape. This one's going to be almost to easy. (I'll probably hafta eat dem words..) I plan on getting things cleaned up and scope out the wear spots & such. Look for more news to come....I'll have pix to share and play by play of the "road to recovery" for this circa 1916 oldie but goody _________________ May your walk through life have no dogpiles in it. |

Hi folks!
Thanks and hello to Martin! This may be a short thread- the Eclipse is in very nice shape. Save for some surface rust and a very few missing parts.
Took the cylinder head off this evening. The bore is very nice. No scratches, scoring or grooves. Just a very slight ridge at the top of ring travel. The exhaust valve and it's seat are in excellent condition. Compression should be a cinch on this one. A glaze breaker type hone to the cylinder wall & a new set of rings will seal things up.
See my ad for parts over in the classified's
Maybe tomorrow I'll get the piston & rod removed and do the rest of the disassembly....Stay tuned for more news! _________________ May your walk through life have no dogpiles in it. |

The Eclipse is dismanted. Now we start the cleaning procedures. This one's gonna get a good steam cleaning and then we see what we have. Myrick engines were painted with a mixture of lamp black and linseed oil. There grey paint was "lamp black, white chalk powder and linseed oil mixed in according portions to produce the desired look" to quote thier factory records. Just tonite I scored the needed parts to complete this one. I'm thinking this will be a 1 month resto job at the most....Definitely not like my StaRite !!! _________________ May your walk through life have no dogpiles in it. |

Brian- Cool stuff finding one with a PR Wico on it- certainly unusual. Would like to see pix of the maggie bracket. Even better you found the needed parts to get it going. Those intakes are a bugger to find these days. I am planning on taking the B model parts up to be cast on the one I got from you- the baby ARACO and steam conversion pretty much took up last year.... Got a serial # to post? Pix?? _________________ Three things in life which never agree- what they said, what you thought and how it actually turned out. |

Most all the big parts have been run through the high pressure hot water washer. Strips the junk off like butter. We are now priming things.
Paul, The serial # on my engine is 1395. I bought a top end for parts from a 4hp H and it is # 1890.

I have taken my Eclipse's tin cylinder cooling cover to our local Amish metalsmith. He told me about a week or so...At any rate, I'm having a few extra made.
The cylinder head is out at the machine shop for a valve guide refit and valve seat touchup. Nothing major, just procedure. _________________ May your walk through life have no dogpiles in it. |

Hi Folks!
Been a long pain in the cash winter....Since the weather broke and money has started to trickle a bit. I've been able to get a few irons back in the fire. I did get the cyl. head back with valves and guides done. New rings were also installed. This Eclipse now has super good compression! I still have more work to do on it and I will keep you detailed on the Eclipse's journey back to life _________________ May your walk through life have no dogpiles in it. |
