Below are some more pictures of the restoration of the 40 HP
Buffalo
Olin. Hope that you enjoy the progress and documentation as much
as
I have.

These are the pictures of the exhaust valve guide support completed with
the babbit
all poured and the parts all assembled...
The base, flywheels, & crankshaft are brought together for the first
time in 22 years....
The original ignitor needs a lot of work and I am going to run the Olin on
the hot tube so I made a 1/2 inch thick plate to take the place
of the ignitor....
The original brasses were missing from this engine when I bought it, so I
borrowed 35 HP Olin brasses and built them up with fiberglass
and had a pair cast up. I am in the process of machining them and in
these next few pictures you can see the pair I borrowed and the
pair I had cast up. The new cast pair weight 62 lbs....
Below is a pictures of the completed 4 inch ported exhaust....
The next few pictures are of pouring the main bearings out of babbit. My
video camera went on the blink part way through this job so you wont see
the actual pour but all the preparation is here.
Heating of the babbit with a propane tourch....
Heating the crankshaft & bearing cap to get all the moisture out. This
is a very important part of the process....
Where I don't want babbit to stick I soot up the crankshaft.
That is what is going on here....
Bringing the base and crankshaft up into position for the mounting of the
bearing caps, applying the dumb dumb, & then pouring the
babbit....
The Skid is together and the Olin is taking shape waiting for
the cylinder. We are getting close to starting her up....
Here is a look at the timing gear, governor, cam, and latch
block....
The base and flywheels waiting for the cylinder...
The brasses are starting to take shape....
Here you can see the machining of a counter bore that locates
the brasses to the connecting rod...
What a feeling seeing the brasses on the connecting rod. Now
we can put the piston and connecting rod together and in the
cylinder it will go...
Here the piston makes it into the cylinder. What a job
getting the connecting rod and wrist pin lined up. I had
to use a lift and a table to balance everyting.....
This was another fun task, getting the cylinder on the bed
of the engine. I made the decision to put the piston into the
cylinder before mounting the cylinder because I didn't have a way
to lift the piston and connecting rod up into the engine at
that height....
The brasses get their final machining. The holes for mounting
the brasses to the connecting rod had to now be opened up to
7/8 diameter. The 5 HP economy and line shaft are hard at
work again....
The brasses are all shimed and the engine is ready to roll...
Before I started the Olin I wanted to move one fly in about 3/4 of
an inch. To do this I had to remove the tapered key. Here you can see
a puller I made out of 1 inch square stock...
Here the 40 HP Buffalo Olin comes to life...
The following photos are from around the engine as I ran
her for the first time...
I have had a lot of fun working on the 40 HP Buffalo Olin and plan
to have a lot of fun running her. With this project I have also learned
a lot. It is by far the biggest project I have done, but what a
feeling when she came to life. This is also the loudest engine I
own, its great!....

Also available is a 3 hour long VHS video of the entire restoration project.
It includes getting the engine, tearing the engine down, making and machining parts,
pouring babbitt, assembling the engine, and running her for the first time. If you
