This engine was mfg. in the early 1900s,
is a cross-head design, 4cycle, side-shaft,
vertical fly-ball governor engine, with both the
exhaust & intake actuated off the cam on
the side-shaft....
It worked in the oilfields of Eastern Indiana...

On October 4th 1998, I purchased this engine from Dr. Paul Harvey one of the founders of the Coolspring Power Museum. Arangements were made to pick the engine up during the Fall Coolspring Swap Meet. Here you can see the long engine being loaded onto my trailer with the Museum's military crane truck, and the next picture is of her all chained down and ready for the trip north to New York...

After making a lot of room in the shop "The Swan" is ready to be moved in. I back the trailer up to my shop and have a hook in the floor so I can use the electric winch on the trailer to suck the engine into the shop...

These next 2 photos are of starting to dismantle the intake valve chest and governor assembly. There is also a nice gas carb. next to the governor you can see in the first photo...

What a beautiful governor... Now we are down to just the intake valve chest...

Both intake & exhaust valve chests are now off the head. This type of head design is called a "T" head with a valve chest on either side of the head. The exhaust valve chest gave the most trouble removing most likely do to the high heat in the area...

Here in these next 2 photos I dismantled the cross-head and connecting rod. The connecting rod from the cross-head to the piston to my surprise was not attached at the piston end. I think this is the reason the engine shut down 54 years ago...

This is the cover for the cylinder head...

With the head cover now removed I started to heat the head up. The head has a large diameter that goes into the cylinder bore. This made it tough to remove, but with a lot of heat and wedges it came off. The second photo shows the head removed and we get our first look at the piston. Notice the weld that was holding the connecting rod to the piston...

In these next 4 photos I started to slide the head and cylinder out of the water jacket cover. What a different design this engine has. After getting the cylinder out 3/4 of the way I found out I needed to remove the head from the cylinder, and the water jacket cover and cylinder would have to come off as a unit. There is a huge flange on the end of the cylinder that needs to come out the rear of the water jacket cover...

I started to remove the head in the first photo. Note the piston was pushed up farther into the head then it should be. This I think had to do with the connecting rod coming loose from the piston. In the second photo you can see the head removed and the back of the piston stcking out...

Here I am removing the water jacket and cylinder sleeve. The sleeve slides inside the water jacket and needs to be removed from the rear. In the second photo I put a rope through the bore in the sleeve and around water jacket so nothing would slip and slide out...
